Caballo Rojo Trail Officially Opens: A Decade Long Vision, Becomes Marin’s Newest Downhill Ride

Marin County, CA – After more than ten years of planning, persistence, and partnership, the highly anticipated Caballo Rojo Trail will officially open to mountain bikers on December 13, following a 1 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. The newest addition to the beloved Tamarancho trail network marks a major milestone for local mountain biking, community advocacy, and sustainable trail development.

Securing the final permits earlier this year capped a decade of work and over $500,000 in engineering and permitting, supported by sustained community engagement and collaboration with local agencies. When the approved permits arrived in August, momentum kicked into high gear.

Over the next ten weeks, the Marin Trail Stewards’ Pro Trails Crew and hundreds of dedicated volunteers built the one mile, downhill only trail, backed by an additional $125,000 in construction funding. The result is Caballo Rojo, a mountain bike only, expertly crafted flow trail designed to enhance the Tamarancho experience while improving safety and access.

Caballo Rojo serves several critical goals:

  • Reduces congestion and eases downhill traffic on Iron Springs Road

  • Provides a purpose built exit trail for riders leaving the network

  • Adds a dynamic, exhilarating new riding option for mountain bikers

  • Community Engagement: 100% of the funding was provided by the MTS community of passionate trail advocates, along with Shimano’s Trail Born grant. No public funding was spent on this project and the construction crew was 95% volunteers!

“Caballo Rojo is the definition of a community-powered project,” said Stephen McDaniel, President of Marin Trail Stewards. “It took years of collaboration, investment, and volunteer passion but the result is a trail that will benefit riders and the broader community for decades to come.”

With permitting complete and construction finished, the trail is now fully built, fully permitted, and (soon) fully open.

Riders: It’s time. Come enjoy Marin’s newest purpose-built downhill mountain bike trail, opening December 13!
